lyell

remember in an earlier "junk" post where i posted an image of one of the works by the artist henry darger? he is actually one of my favorite artists and i am a bit shocked that i have yet to do an artist spotlight post about him

well my love of him made me even more excited when i read about the NYC brand Lyell and their use of darger's artwork in a collage to display the collection that they do in collaboration with urban outfitters

i'm a bit sad that i can't afford anything by them in my current state of unemployment (i think me mentioning that is beginning to become a trend) but at least i can look at the pretty pictures of their clothes and get inspiration as i hope to visit their shop sometime in the future

twenty

dress: made by me
sunglasses: earthbound trading co.
70s spoon ring: my mothers
necklace: gift from my BFF (for my 19th birthday)
shoes: vulture culture vintage

i had my twentieth birthday last saturday, it wasn't that exciting but i did finish the dress that i was making specifically for it in time, at least if "in time" includes the morning of...

i mentioned above that it wasn't exciting but i did do something instead of lounging at my parent's house, my mother, grandmother, sister and i went to the Lazy 5 Ranch where we saw a bunch of adorable animals (including lemurs!) and later on i hung out with my BFF, her fiance, and another friend and we sat around and ate pizza while we watched episodes of the last season of Buffy on DVD, it totally made me think of middle school when there used to be reruns of buffy on TV all the time which, as i nerdy as it is, i kind of miss

wake up

i ran across this gorgeous cowel the other day on yarnovermovement's etsy shop and i must say i have been drooling over it ever since, it would be a perfect addition to my fall wardrobe but at $28 i don't know if i can convince myself to fork over the cash for it unless i get a job soon, there are many other wonderful things in her shop as well but those are definitely out of my budget no matter how much i try to convince myself otherwise

last suppers

this series of photographs by James Reynolds are really interesting and such a cool concept, in them he depicts former Death Row prisoners' requests for their last meal before execution, what a great idea

one olive? this prisoner must have had a sense of humor

an onion? seriously?

only one saltine and 6 cokes, strange...

6 eggs? really?

alphabet town

recently i have been enamored with the work of Phil Yamada who is a Vancouver based graphic designer, his paint on print series is especially pleasing, i have always liked using things like newspaper and cardboard in my artwork and this simple series is just so interesting and divine, if you want to you can view all the letters in larger individual images and check out his other work at his website

threading

one site that completely enabled my desire to DIY is a site i discovered at the beginning of the summer last year, i was searching for a tutorial about how to do your own screen printing because the first semester of that year in my graphic communications class i learned how to do it but wanted to know how i could screen print at home, well anyways through a google search i discovered one on Threadbanger and after a little more exploration of the site i was hooked

i loved their videos, and guest tutorials and their concepts on sustainability and how to recycle things and not waste which is something i totally agree with, you will probably here the words "smart consumerism" coming out of my mouth when someone asks me why i don't just buy everything new instead of raiding thrift stores, antique stores and ebay for a large part of my possessions, i must say their videos can get pretty cheesy but so can i, so it really isn't that big of a deal to me

episodes:
threadbanger projects
ispydiy
decor it yourself (my favorite!)
